Gasp, a website update?

Yep, I actually went and worked a little bit on my blog over the weekend! I updated WordPress (it’s shameful how far behind it’s been), and more noticeably, I changed the font out. I’m not entirely sure if I want to keep it or revert back. It is pretty, yes, but gosh–that Flash of Unstyled Text (or worse, no text) is horrible. Plus, Firebug tells me that Firefox is trying to get the font file every single time I reference it in my stylesheet.

That is plain horrible–no one needs a font multiple times–and it is making me seriously rethink this. I know, I know–it’s a blog, and I very much doubt I have readers who would still be on dialup. But it is taunting me and my years shaving kilobytes off page loading time D:

Tell me, is it worth it?

    Haha, no, not the patience of a saint–the patience of someone who is too lazy to go out to the coffee shop for faster internet, or who internets too late at night to use said shop for wireless leeching. LOL I’m always amazed now when I actually get access to faster internet and Facebook loads like *SNAP*. I’m like “Oh wow, it’s already done loading.” Hooray, I’m enjoying the Internet 1999-style. xD

    I’m probably “The Last of the Dialups” (instead of Last of the Mohicans), so unless you get some negative feedback about the new font, you should be okay. ^_^

    Actually, I’m a reader who’s still on dialup :) Your site didn’t take excessively long to load on 50.6 kbps, (prob. about one minute, if that), and the Flash of Unstyled Text lasted about 10 seconds. (The hardest thing for dialup to deal with is the background images, generally, but your text and links appeared almost instantaneously–they looked fine and were aligned correctly.)

    I would say the new font is totally worth it–it looks very different from other websites and gives your content a little visual flavor. And btw, I’m using Firefox and haven’t noticed any hiccups in performance on your site… :) The multiple requests for the font file don’t seem to have hurt anything on this end. Rock on with your bad (but actually good) webdesign self. ^_^

      Oh wow, I never knew! You have the patience of a saint, I am in awe. I would be annoyed with a 10s wait :s And I can’t help but feel that 10s of unstyled text is just plain unacceptable. I’ll have to try and see if gzipping them would help!

      But thank you! I do like the new font myself and how it works out for the whole site. I don’t want to let it go D:
